Herb Caen
1916-1997

I had the pleasure of meeting Herb Caen only a few times over the years.
He was always kind and gracious, truly a gentleman of the old school. His daily
column defined the issues and revealed the foibles of San Francisco, and
somehow connected me with The City. Reading his column made me part of a
living community, a rich tapestry of an incredible diversity of living beings, of every
color, nationality; and social level. He made each of them a neighbor and an
intimate part of my life in San Francisco...I will truly miss him for many reasons, but
most of all for making me feel that I belong here.

I submitted five or six items to him over the years, and he was kind enough to print
three of them...This one is my favorite. Thank you, Herb, for your kindness...
